Case
Student Center

After the library, classrooms
and laboratories, the student center is the heartbeat of a college
campus. It's where important student services and facilities such as
the bookstore, snack bar, mailroom and student organizations are centered,
and where students, faculty, and staff gather for social interaction,
meetings and special events. To renovate and expand such a facility
with minimal disruption of campus life is no easy task.
As Construction Manager for the Case Student
Center renovation and expansion project for longtime client Skidmore
College, MLB worked closely with College officials to carefully plan
and schedule this four-phase project. Intelligent value engineering
helped to maximize program within budgetary confines.
Construction of the 20,000 square foot addition
was the first order of business to facilitate both temporary and permanent
relocation of certain functions and facilities such as the kitchen,
faculty-staff dining room, and cyber cafe. Subsequent relocation of
the mailroom, student mailboxes and the bookstore allowed for an orderly
flow of work to renovate the existing structure while maintaining essential
operations and services to students. Any shutdowns of operating systems
required to accomplish substantial mechanical and electrical upgrades
were executed during student breaks and vacation periods.
